Through our school vision, curriculum and teaching we promote tolerance and respect for all cultures, faiths and lifestyles.
As a school we have a duty to prepare our learners for life in modern Britain and to keep them safe. A positive inclusive ethos with clear expectations for behaviour towards one another underpins this. All learners are encouraged to promote care/tolerance for each other and share learning experiences.
Throughout our Curriculum and Ethos we aim to promote Fundamental British Values within all aspects of Carlyle infant and Nursery School. We expect individuals associated with our school to aim to adhere and respect these values which unite us all whatever faith, ethnicity, culture or beliefs.
The values we hold dear are the values of tolerance, equality, respect, co-operation, responsibility, compassion and democracy. There are times when our taught curriculum cover these values as themes but we also make best use of opportunities from local, national and global issues as they arise. The way in which we teach these is cyclical and appropriate to the stages of development of the children.
A display in our welcoming area shares these values and how we work in our community to support these.
Our RE curriculum develops learners understanding of a broad range of cultures and faiths. PSHE/Jigsaw sessions draw out themes which help learners to develop respect for others.
Weekly year group assemblies reflecting on British Values, discussions, weekly current affairs assemblies, special event/celebrations (Easter, Harvest, Remembrance, Christmas), themed learning weeks and regular charity events all contribute to a strong sense of community. Children learn about specific festivals throughout the year following our online Multicultural calendar.
Specific topics which are part of our integrated curriculum which show our commitment to clear British Values are:-
- RE visits to special places
- Local, National and Global history knowledge.
- British landmarks and there importance.
- Studies about British monarchs.
Class/School Council is a platform for ‘pupil voice’ enabling learners to directly question or challenge how Carlyle Infant and Nursery School could be ‘even better’.
Rule of Law
The theme of good citizenship and being a valued part of ‘Carlyle Infant and Nursery School’ is clear. The local Police support the school community where appropriate, particularly in the nearby park area and with the security of all.
Individual liberty/mutual respect/tolerance of faiths and beliefs
At Carlyle we actively encourage learners to make informed choices knowing that they are in a supportive environment in which we foster safe boundaries. Respect for one another is a central theme of our community and is particularly evident in our ‘Carlyle Community Forum’. We give learners many opportunities to experience the cultural diversity of society in which we live and promote shared positive, moral views. Our PHSE sessions enhance this aspect.

Any learner considered to be at risk of being exposed to any extremist material/views or influences will be given support within school and we also work with local agencies such as the ‘Prevent’ team to protect individuals.
